Antibiotics: Penicillins

Indication:

Bacterial infections.

Mode of Action:

Weakens bacterial cell wall, causing cell death.

Cautions:

History of allergies to penicillin or cephalosporins.

Indication:

GI upset (e.g., diarrhea, nausea, vomiting), allergic reaction (e.g., dyspnea, rash), superinfection (e.g., C. diff).

NC/PT:

Monitor for allergic reaction. Monitor bowel function. Antibiotic considerations (card 22). Take full prescribed dose, don't stop early.
