tetracycline (Sumycin)

Class:

Antibiotics: Tetracyclines

Indication:

A wide variety of bacterial infections (e.g., acne, lyme disease, STIs, Rocky Mountain spotted fever).

Mode of Action:

Prevents protein synthesis, inhibiting bacterial growth (bacteriostatic).

Cautions:

Pregnancy, children < 8 years old.

Indication:

GI upset, tooth discoloration in children and fetuses, hepatotoxicity, photosensitivity, superinfection (e.g., C. diff).

NC/PT:

↓ Effectiveness of oral contraceptives. Wear sunscreen. Dairy products, foods high in calcium and iron, and antacids ↓ absorption. Antibiotic considerations (card 22).
